I came across a Warren Buffet quote the other day that resonated with me. It said,
“Much of what you become in life depends on whom you choose to admire and copy.”
I realized that this sentiment applied as much to my health and wellness as it does to my financial or business success. Early on in this “Getting Healthy” process I asked myself who did I want to be like in terms of my wellness? Which people did I want to emulate? There appears to be no end to the availability of health resources, diet advice, and resident experts on the subject of healthy living, so determining who to believe, and what to read or follow felt overwhelming.
I knew first and foremost that I wanted to follow a program that I could do forever. I had done countless diets before, but those programs offered no life-long sustainable ideology. Further, each of these required eating food that was, well, to be honest, not real food—showing up in boxes and packages and sporting ingredient lists that were unidentifiable and unpronounceable. What in the world are “maltitol,” “fractionated palm kernel oil,” and “polydextrose”? And if I have no idea what they are, should I really be eating them?
The idea that food should be “real” and as close to its natural state as possible resonated with me and I began to educate myself about that kind of eating by finding resources that preached that way of thinking. I will be honest, I was actually depressed when I began learning about the woes of the American food industry and all the junk that is in our food. It can be pretty scary stuff. Even so, I admit I’ll still eat an Oreo every now and then, but I just don’t buy them like I used to (if they’re in my house, you can blame one of my kids!).
Again, the key for me was the idea that “food is fuel” and “food is medicine”, so I tried to find resources that preached those ideals. Some of the resources I lean most on are:
Whole 30- Melissa Hartwig & Dallas Hartwig
Food: What the Heck Should I Eat- Dr. Mark Hyman
The Peagan Diet- Dr. Mark Hyman
Blue Zones- Dan Buettner
Food Babe Kitchen- Vani hari
I’m definitely not perfect and I can always work to make improvements, but I’m doing what I can and trying to get a little better every day. You know, poco a poco.
